Serengeti National Park, also referred to as Serengeti Park or Serengeti Park Tanzania, is globally recognized as one of the world’s premier wildlife sanctuaries. Renowned for its unparalleled natural beauty, ecological diversity, and scientific importance, it supports the largest concentration of plains game in Africa.

Situated in northern Tanzania, Serengeti National Park is a central feature of the Greater Northern Tourist Circuit, which includes Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, and Tarangire National Park. The park’s name originates from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning “endless plain,” reflecting the vast, open savannahs that define the landscape. Serengeti forms part of the Greater Serengeti Ecosystem, sharing its southern border with Ngorongoro Conservation Area and extending northward to Kenya’s Maasai Mara, creating one of the most important transboundary wildlife regions in Africa.

The Serengeti ecosystem has remained remarkably stable for millions of years, preserving its climate, vegetation, and wildlife. The park is also a site of exceptional anthropological significance. Olduvai Gorge, located within the park, provides evidence of early human activity dating back nearly two million years, highlighting the region’s role in the evolution of humankind.

Serengeti National Park is internationally celebrated for the annual Wildebeest Migration, widely regarded as one of the world’s most extraordinary natural spectacles. Over one million wildebeest, accompanied by approximately 200,000 zebras, migrate southward from the northern hills to the southern plains during the short rains of October and November. Following the long rains in April, May, and June, they return north and west. This migration demonstrates the resilience and instinctual behavior of these species, as they navigate rivers, gorges, and predator-rich landscapes.

The park’s diverse habitats support a wide range of wildlife, including the Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros—as well as over 500 recorded bird species. Notable sites and attractions within Serengeti include Olduvai Gorge, Moru Kopjes, Retina Hippo Pool, Grumeti River, and Seronera Valley. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to engage with the Maasai people, whose culture and traditions have coexisted harmoniously with the wildlife for centuries.
